Erik Stephens began his financial planning practice at Northwestern Mutual in early 2015 after years of focus on developing a career path in the medical field. His passion to become an orthopedic surgeon began in 7th grade, around the same time he decided he would play college basketball. His passion to make waves athletically was combatted only by his 5’9” stature, but it didn’t stop him from fulfilling his dream. He headed to the upper peninsula of Michigan and began what would be much more than just a basketball career at Michigan Technological University. He learned quickly that many students at Michigan Tech were also far from home and taking on new challenges, many in a rigorous engineering program, and that he had a unique skill set: building relationships. It was then that he began to realize that pursuing a career in medicine may limit, especially early in his career, his ability to build those intimate and intentional relationships he so desired.

“I ultimately felt like I would be taking someone else’s spot in the medical world that may be more passionate than I was. I love understanding the science behind everything I do, and certainly that applied to medical world, but I also have this competitive, social and hustle side of me. Sacrificing the first 15 years of my career when I knew I could be putting both sides to work to have an impact just didn’t seem like the right fit.”

After a short post-grad stint with Medpace in Cincinnati, Ohio, he decided to use his analytical ability combined with his energy and relationship skills to have impact on his clients’ financial lives in the medical & engineering worlds. Working on a similar consultative basis, his team works to understand his clients pain points, provide remedies to the gaps they uncover and work to get their clients financially healthy.
